DC Shadow provides opportunities to elevate high-level women and non-binary ultimate athletes. We strive to develop high-quality competition for our athletes, furnish leadership experience for our staff, and develop local community partnerships to grow our organization.

We intend to utilize our platform to raise gender and racial justice issues and employ our vision to hold ourselves accountable to each other, our volunteers, and the greater DC Community.

OUR VISION

As an organization we seek to advance competitive excellence of women and non-binary ultimate players in the greater DC community. We look to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in ultimate. In order to do so, we intend to focus on the following in 2021:

  • Define what it means to produce a professional experience for our athletes as players and members of the community

  • Build relationships with existing ultimate frisbee organizations (club, college, league, youth, etc.) in the greater DC community

  • Connect with local communities and proactively seek opportunities to elevate marginalized groups

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

D.C. Shadow acknowledges that it plays on the occupied land of the Anacostan, Nacotchtank, Pamunkey, and Piscataway people. As a result, we will develop a plan to pay Land Rent to groups supporting and advocating for Native American rights and resources. We will also discuss and share stories of those lands we play on. Acknowledgement and payment is not enough.

We currently in the process of removing the use “womxn” in our organization. We intend to continually explore the definitions, use, and critiques of the term “womxn,” notably the degree to which non-binary and transgender players feel included. We are considering the use of other languages in materials or inviting the broader D.C. community for discussion.
